First meeting of 2013 on April 7

Happy Spring to all! At least the calendar says it is Spring.

We are ready to begin a new Genealogy Year. Our first meeting for 2013 of the Genealogy Committee of the Armstrong County Historical Museum and Genealogy Society will be on Sunday, April 7, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM in the Mildred Lankerd Thomas Genealogy Library – 300 North McKean Street, Kittanning, PA.

This will be a research meeting and a time to share all the items we have discovered over the winter months.

Tentatively for May 5, we will have Brenda George of the Armstrong County Prothonotary and Marianne Hileman of the Armstrong County Register and Recorder offices of the Court House. They will tell us what their office holds in the line of genealogy and how to go about
getting the information. I am still in the process of firming these speakers up.

Best wishes for a Happy Easter to all and hope to see all on Sunday, April 7th.

Stay warm.

November 4, 2012 Meeting

The Genealogy Committee of the Armstrong County Historical Museum and Genealogy Society will hold their monthly meeting on Sunday, November 4, 2012 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM in the Mildred Lankerd Thomas Genealogy Library – 300 North McKean Street, Kittanning, PA 16201.

This will be the final meeting for the year. Persons attending are asked to bring along a “snack food” to share during this meeting. We will also be selecting committee officers for 2013 during this meeting.

The featured speaker will be Ron Montgomery who will talk on Family Naming Patterns and it’s Use in Genealogical Research. This will be a very interesting and informative program presented by Ron.

Portrait of presenter

During the 18th and 19th centuries many parents used traditional naming patterns to assign names to their children. Combining an understanding of these traditions with your knowledge of an ancestor’s children, often allows you to discover the names of more ancient ancestors. For example, the children’s names may clearly reflect the identity of their grandparents and other relatives. Mr. Montgomery will discuss these traditions and, using a case study, demonstrate how they can be used in genealogical research. He will also provide worksheets to help you apply the technique to your family tree.

The Armstrong Historical Museum and Genealogical Society offer this and other such programs to help you pass along your family story to its newest members.

Write down your family history and pass it on.
