November 6, 2011 – Genealogy Committee Meeting

The Genealogy Committee of the Armstrong County Historical Museum and Genealogy Society will hold their monthly meeting on Sunday, November 6, 2011 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM in the Mildred Lankerd Thomas Genealogy Library – 300 North McKean Street, Kittanning, PA.

This will be the last meeting for the year. No speaker has been scheduled and this will be a research meeting. This will also be an end of the year social. Persons attending are asked to bring a snack item to share with the others, ie., cookies, chips, drinks, dessert, etc.

We will also be selecting a Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Secretary for the Genealogy Committee for 2012.

If you have any item or ideas to share with the other genealogists, please bring them along to the meeting.

October 2, 2011 – Genealogy Committee Meeting

The Genealogy Committee of the Armstrong County Historical
Museum and Genealogy Society will hold their monthly meeting
on Sunday, October 2, 2011 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM in the Mildred
Lankerd Thomas Genealogy Library – 300 North McKean Street,
Kittanning, PA.

Armstrong County Commissioner, James Scahill will present a
first person interpretation on General John Forbes. General
Forbes was a British General in the French and Indian War and
was best known for leading the Forbes Expedition that captured the French outpost at Fort Duquesne. Forbes decided on the march and declared on arrival at the “Forks of
the Ohio” that he was naming this place in honor of his mentor and Prime Minister, William Pitt, to be called
“Pittsbourgh”.

Mr. Scahill will have a uniform representing General Forbes
and also will bring items that were used at the time, such as
a gun and musket balls. He will discuss and take you on a
journey of the march of Forbes and his men and answer the
question, “Why was Forbes there?”

Individual research will follow the presentation.

Genealogy Meeting – September 11, 2011

The Genealogy Committee of the Armstrong County Historical Museum and Genealogy Society will hold their monthly meeting on Sunday, September 11, 2011 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM in the Mildred Lankerd Thomas Genealogy Library – 300 North McKean Street, Kittanning, PA

Dr. William W. Betts, Jr., retired English Professor from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) will speak on his latest book, “Rank and Gravity, The Life of General John Armstrong of Carlisle”. This is a biography of one of the most prominent and influential figures of 18th century Pennsylvania. Most famous as the “first citizen of Carlisle” and as the “hero of Kittanning”.

Research will follow the presentation.
